We have the permits (all of them) - and thanks to everyone, in particular FlyingDogs,Dr.Ralph et al, for all helpful information for bringing in pets to the Bahamas. One last question which doesn't seem to have been addressed fully - does one REALLY have to seek out a vet within 48 hours of arrival with dogs (2 big black labs...) in tow? Dogs will be coming in to TC - nearest vet is in Marsh Harbour and, as far as i know, not open every day. Just seems like a difficult task to transport dogs and owners all that way. Feasible, but difficult. Any answers out there? thanks in advance

Have never heard of that requirement being followed. As long as you have the proper paper work to bring in your pets you will be OK. By the way, and for future referance, the TC Humane Society is raising money to build a complex which would include space in which a vet could practice albeit probably won't be on an everyday basis. When this will come about I do not know but they surely could use donations. Of course we don't need to remind you to bring a supply of baggies or a pooper scooper, some Frontline or similar treatment and the heart worm chewies if you're staying awhile.:-). There is no "off season" for fleas and ticks.

Dr. Bailey has office hours every day during the week and probably Sat. mornings and is available for emergencies on weekends and evenings. He does travel to other Cays on occasion but the vet tech is in the office on those days. His number is:367 3647 and we suggest you call the office and obtain his cell phone emergency number when you arrive... just in case. Dr. Hannah is in Marsh on Thursdays only until about 4PM - 367 3551. Ch. 80 on your VHF usually can get you "The Iceman" and he generally can find Dr. Bailey.

The requirement is that you have the pet examined by a vet within 48 before arrival. In other words, take your labs to your vet the day before departure and have the vet fill out the form. I've been traveling to MH with our two labs for six years and that's what I do.

BlueCrab,
Do you happen to have a copy of the form you're referring too? The guys in Nassau only faxed me back the actual permits, but no forms. I found a copy of something that was basically a two line statement claiming the dogs are healthy. And i'll get a Veterinary Health Certificate, but i want to make sure i have everything for the trip over.
Thanks.

FYI (you may already know) there was mention on TV last month that the dog treat known as "greenies" had caused several deaths and injuries. Apparently, they get gulped by the dogs, as dogs do!, and expand in their gut, causing problems. They mentioned that this was a very popular dog treat/breath treatment, but that there had been problems. Now of course if you can teach your dog to chew his food properly... let me know your secret!

thanks for the info on greenies....I had no idea, and totally missed the warnings. Will let my son know - he and his wife have the labs. And thanks to everyone with pet info - your responses have been most helpful.

Blue Crab is exactly correct about having the vet certificated dated 48 hours PRIOR to arrival. Now the problem . . . if arriving by boat: if you get stuck wating for a weather window for crossing the 48 hour time frame could be gone. JUst ask your vet to leave the date blank by explaining the situation.
About the greenies . . . yes, they are bad for dogs . . . just pitch them!
