I have fished the gulf out of orange beach, al for many years. I mainly fish for bluewater species and have figured out what to pull when and what conditions to look for. my question is i am taking my boat from palm beach and going to green turtle at the end of april to pull for blue marlin. 1. what are some popular areas to pull 2. i plan on pulling the same lures that i normally pull ,islanders, bob schnieder, moldcraft ect. or is ther something else you would pull and last 3. is that going to be a productive time of year. i am not as much interested in the other sepcies mainly just interested in the big blue guy but not going to be picky.

April is a great time for shots at blue marlin in the Abacos.

All the lures you mentioned are fine. I would add an Ilander/Horse ballyhoo or two to the mix and on 300-pound leader (if you're strictly gunning for blues).

As far as fishing areas, best bet is to get a Roffer's Fishing Forecast Analysis each evening, and look for any strong current edges or temperature breaks (which may only vary a half degree or so). If these breaks are over good bottom (such as areas that drop out sharply from 600 feet or so; underwater humps or crevices) that's where I'd start. There are some good bottom charts that show the more popular bottom depressions in that area (Waterproof Chart Company; Captain Seagull). Current and water quality are essential and, of course, keep your eyes open for the obvious - birds, concentrations of bait, weedlines, etc.

I hope that helps some.

George I've read you stories about fishing for years -you're going at the right time(April-May) May was the Walker's tournament time(I won it one year) and then it was followed by the Treasure Cay tournament.

Go out the N Whale cay passage and head for the drop-off NE(600-1000') find a weed line and go for it. If that fails head south to Elbow-just head E from the lighthouse. I wish I could go with you.
