The entrance to Snake Cay once had a fence with a gate preventing entry in the mid-70s, which was likely put up by Owens-Illinois due to liability concerns when the place was deserted. Does the gate still exist? and if so, is it locked thereby barring entry to casual visitors? I'm planning to visit Snake Cay and was wondering whether we can drive there and get in okay.

Thanks!

My husband says the last time he was there, you could drive all the way to the dock, no problem. There has been talk of putting a dump on Snake Cay but haven't heard any talk recently.

Pat, the "dump" is NOT on Snake Cay.

There is a properly designed Land Fill being constructed about 2 miles west of Snake Cay.

The road to Snake Cay is partially paved, and is open to visitors, although the earthen dock is in very poor shape as it is seldom used anymore.

I was exploring there once as a boy and suffered a 2-inch glass cut on my heel as a result of walking atop a pile (boys are dumb!) I guess the dump back then must have been smaller than it is now.

Thanks for the info!

Speaking of dumps, on our trip to Green Turtle last week, my husband went to the dump with our local friend Dale Roberts. It was an environmental mess, but it fascinated my husband, so he actually went back in a golf cart to show it to our 13 year old daughter and she was also very intrigued and kept begging, every time we rode towards Green Turtle Club to visit the dump again. Go figure -- in a tropical paradise and she wants to go hang out at the dumpl. It is a sad place, though, full of abandoned kitties. Our friends rescued one that got caught up in the fire at the dump and lost most of its tail and burned its paws -- it is a normal fiesty cat now. there are also a bunch of little chicks abandoned by their moms all over the place that our friend's son tried to rescue with not much success.

There needs to be a better solution to garbage dumping. I know it is difficult to deal with on a small island. I was happy to finally see recycling bins around town, but there did not seem to be any big effort to get visitors to recycle (such as a separate recycle bin in our rental house). We tried to save up recyclables and carry into town to the bins.
