Apparently work is well underway with professional crew to finally remove the oil rig that blew onto the reef near Johnny's Cay. They say once it can be made lighter and watertight, they plan to float it off and hopefully deposit further out to sea to create another dive sight. Divers say damage to reef is not too bad.

Yeah it looked like it was stuck there pretty good from the pictures posted a while back. That may have limited the amount of damage it did. I would be interested in seeing pictures of it coming off the reef and such. There is potential for a lot of damage once it does get lighter and can start shifting around on the reef.

Thank papanasty for getting 'er done! Before I left on my trip, he was making phone calls to see what could be done to get it off the reef and I come back 10 days later and the thing is being removed!

As JJ stated, Papanasty did a remarkable job of coordinating and expediting this effort. His constant communication and technical knowledge has been the key to getting this project underway at last. It has been well documented within another medium.
Well done!

Lots of people talk and talk, but Papa Nasty is a doer. After Hurricane Floyd in 1999 when the road to White Sound was gone, he spearheaded the project to open up the road again. When Hope Town School needs anything, where his darling little daughter attends, he is right there. I am sure that there are many many other projects he is involved in for the betterment of Abaco. Now this seemingly impossible task is getting done via Papa Nasty. To know Papa Nasty is to love him. He is getting old and slowing down like the rest of us (especially after his open-heart surgery), but when he puts his clever mind to something, it gets done. Thank you Nasty, as that boat was definately going to be beached forever on the north side beaches of Guana in the next 'cane!!!

Great to hear you have made it possible to get the Rig off the reef! Once again you are the do'er. I will never forget your help digging out my house in Floyd and then again in Frances. Thank you Pappa, Phil (Leeway)

They've got their work cut out for them. On 7/2 I saw about 5 guys crawling around that derelict tub, working with torches. There's about a 30 foot gash from the waterline to halfway up on the port side and a large vertical split near the bow on the starboard side. I don't know how they will make it watertight to tow it out to deepwater (I'm assuming they will be scuttling it). It looks like it's about to fall apart now!

What is the latest with the removal?? From the North End of Elbow Cay, it is hard to tell--but it looks the same.
Is there hope? Thanks for any information!

They did indeed start to dismantle the mess on the deck, and are disposing of some of the pieces in 90ft of water. If you would like more info, you can email me at:
