David Gurney, friend and prior resident, is trying to verify that Sandra and Robert Albury (and family) of Marsh Harbor are all well and fine. He asked me to send this email as he has not been able to reach them today. If anyone knows of this family, please let them know! Thanks ...Linda L Rees-Murray, Clermont, Florida

I receive the local Miami news and just heard a report from the crew that is stationed at the Abaco Beach Resort. (This is the same crew providing a feed to The Weather Channel.)

At 6:30, the anchors announced that they had just heard from the crew via sat phone and that they were still in the shelter, doing well, but unable to broadcast at the present time. Their last live report on the air was at 2:30 or so. Reports are expected as soon as it is safe to go outdoors.

Let's all hope that this storm gets moving and off of Abaco soon.

we have a home in great abaco club and would like info also. Saw some tv footage on the weather channel of the marina and saw some familiar faces. WE weathered the last storm pretty well at the club during Floyd ...always concerned about lives and services. Looking for any news as soon as it is available. Thinking about everyone there and sending our thoughts and prayers.

We just heard from Chad.

Everyone is OK on Pelican Shores.

He said everyone is OK on the local Abaco cays to his knowledge, and he has made quite a bit of contact from what we understood - from our brief conversation.

He has been out and around; houses look OK; lots and lots of trees down.

It was a very brief conversation on the satt phone - it is still raining pretty hard.

That is really all I know, so please don't hit me with questions - I'll post to the board if and when we hear stuff.

Thanks,

John

At 10:40 EDT, Weather channel had video footage from the miami news crew staying at boat harbour. Very short feed, no reporter v/o or on screen comments. Weather channel reports "the worse there is over" but still very much rain and wind visible.

No shots of sea of abaco, looks like they stepped out the door of their room and filmed the parking lot behind the hotel..

Good news is, if the news crew made it outside to film... then worst does seem to be over...

CNN also has had feeds from this crew before the storm hit...

The Weather Channel just showed a new clip from Marsh Harbour, filmed inside the resort. The news reporter that is stationed there at Abaco Beach Resort, Judy Echavez, was injured today trying to film some footage. She was hit by a piece of syrofoam and it broke a rib. As she said, anything flying at 80 MPH is dangerous!!!

Our daughter, her husband and their one year old baby live in Marsh Harbour. We maintained contact with them through MSM Messenger until early evening yesterday, but they lost their cable connection when Frances moved towards Freeport.

We're now anxiously waiting to hear from them!!! Our thoughts and prayers are with ALL of those in the Bahamas, but especially those that have no insurance and have so little already!!!

Bob Buchan at Driftaway just called on a portable phone to tell us that our damage was very little. A few shingles on the overhang but not over the main part of the house, one panel of plywood and one of the porch windows blown in. I don't know if it is broken or just out of the frame. Even the orchids survived. The road had a few trees down which they took care of and the Tolers had some water in their house which Bob and Tommy cleaned up. Hope everyone else had it just as easy or better. Bill

CNN JUST did a live report out of Marsh Harbour. The reporter (Judy Echavez with WPLG) said that the the tip of Abaco that took the eyewall is where all the cell phone towers and land line towers are and they were damaged/destroyed. Damage in Marsh Harbour included structural damage to buildings, flooding, etc.

She also reported that they had heard that two people were air lifted out of Marsh Harbour. I talked with my son-in-law's mother who lives in Nassau, Bahamas this morning and she had heard the same report about the two being air lifted.

Hello Everyone

I have to say I am sorry I was given some bad information on the airports. I did see planes flying over yesterday and 2 people here told me that Marsh was open. In fact the person who first told me was the sister in law of the man that flew the plane that went over. She confirmed through another source for me that the airport was open. My husband is on his way to Marsh Harbor right now to get the real scoop and I’ll report back.. Again I am sorry for the misinformation.

But I just read this on the board

TC airport is operating

We're in the Atlanta area and looking to Hitch Hike with anyone who may be flying to TC from the Southeast. I called Continental and they have flight out of Miami at 1:15 today. Still waiting any word on how the beachfront of GTC is before we come down. We'd be happy to split charter- please email me.

Thanks, Brad Barrett

Here is some information from an email I received yesterday. The information was from Jim Eastwood at the resort, who called his daughter on a sattelite phone.

Abaco has had 19 “ of rain. There was no flooding of units in the Abaco Towns portion of the resort (timeshare portion). Storm surge missed damaging us : no serious flooding of our units. Roofs held up well too; no serious damage done. 2 beachfront units received minor water damage in the ceiling (from the wind and rain combined)We lost the deck at the beachfront. There is Vegetation damage on the resort (trees blown over, etc)

News around town: Flooding on the roadways is starting to subside. Sapodilly’s restaurant lost one of their big sapodilly trees, otherwise fine. Wally’s restaurant (and Maureen and staff) is fine.

Everything that could be moved from the beach was, including lawn furniture, shells on the railings and the coconuts from the trees.

Jim and Chris estimate they may begin receiveing guests again on Saturday (which is great!)

I managed to reach, by regular phone from Canada, my neighbours Ian and
Emmi Roberts in Marsh Harbour on Pelican Shores Rd. They are all fine and
their house is undamaged. This is a big relief since after Floyd they had a
lot.

House damage in their immediate area seems to be minimal, but trees down and
vegetation cleanup is a big task ahead.
Power is on down this street and at least some of the regular wire
line(Batelco) phones are up. Not mine though.

Emmi reports the airport is taking incoming flights, Bo and Libby Roberts
arrived yesterday. Commercial flights will follow very soon.

Town water is off in the whole of MH since the main pumps out close to the
airport were flooded (not a surprise after 19 inches of rain). Replacement
parts(motors probably) will be in about a week from now.

Our house seems to be undamaged on exterior shell inspection. Van ditto.
Interior water damage yet to be assessed. I will find out later today.

David Towner will be down on Thursday for inspection.

Peter Sutherland is still in Hobe Sound known to be safe but not able to
communicate out yet. Helen please let me know how he is and what his plans
are.
I am not coming down in friend's plane til the need is further confirmed and I am not
aware of the status of the airports in Peter's locality ie Fort Pierce and
Stuart muni airports.

Tonia van Mill says she will wait for Ivan to pass thru and then come back
to her house to stay.

Long distance service to MH was possible last night. according to my informant the problem link was the SP tower and it is now repaired.

This is not to say that callers in wont get "all circuits are busy" message but the system is in place. Try later in the evening or early in the morn will work best. informant did not have power or water but said the town is coming back together as water recedes and road are cleared of fallen trees.

Johnny Cakes home faired well. Dock has some damage but still there. Neighbors dock is gone. Lots of roof damage with shingles off and some down to plywood. Some homes have water damage. Properties on higher ground-some lost roofs. Sea did not come up as high as Floyd. Marsh Harbour Marina has dock damage. Still no power did get water for a short time this morning but very murky. Drinking water can be found at some gas stations. Some phone service in area but goes on and off. No internet access with coralwave. Maybe some time before they have service again. Gas – Shell Station is running (1) pump using generator. K&S is also pumping gas. Marsh Harbour Airport under water as of yesterday. Airport building is ok but did have water inside. Sea Star Car Rentals new building at airport was knee deep in water as of yesterday. Cars are all running but don’t look very pretty, some windows broken. Solomon Brothers open for food. Messages from johnncake who is located on Pelican Shore in Marsh Harbour:

9/7/04 Noon – Power still off – DSL will not work. Phone on and off. Contractor already repairing roof across the street. Abaco tug boat pushing large barge with a truck going to Elbow Cay.“

9/7/04 1250PM “Drove over to Eastern Shore – Ferries running to all Cays. Seawater went across the road at Crossing Beach area. Does not look bad and passable. Drove to the end of Eastern Shore with no problem – street is clear. Doing a drive by found the East Side of the peninsula had more damage than the West Side. Looking from the road there were shingles off and water damage. Metal roofs seemed to do well. Only property names that come to mind are:

Palm House – building to east bare plywood on roof and water damage. West Side building some roof damage.

Wheelhouse – shingles gone down to plywood on East Side and most likely water damage.

Peas & Rice – lots of shingles missing.

Slip-A-Way – fared well – Lost only a few shingles – Cheryl Lawrence(owner) says thanks for all the prayers and concerns about everyone’s safety.

All structures on Eastern Shores are standing. Damage from water and missing shingles do vary.

The people of Abaco will work as hard as possible to get everything back to normal. As I look out my window, the Sea of Abaco looks as beautiful as it always was . “ Johnnycake.

Spoke with Chris at the Regattas of Abaco this morning. They were still without electricity and water. Chris was meeting with Bahamas Electric today to see about restoring power. Some roof damages to a couple units. Overall, he said they fared pretty well considering what could have happened. Not as bad as Floyd five years ago. They still cannot call out on the land-lines. He said the stores stocked fairly well prior to the storm and all were open.

He will let me know if they need anything shipped over and I will forward that information when I have it.

Truman Major called us from his cell phone this afternoon and his home phone in Hope Town tonight. The phones are working, for some anyway! Truman and Lyn and boys are fine -- house is fine too.

Also, received a call from Keith and Melinda Rogers of Dive Abaco in Marsh Harbour. They are fine -- as are the shop, boat, house, many Potcakes, and cats. No power or phones at the house, and driving to town is tough because of the flooding. They called from a friend's phone and said they had no idea when their phones and electricity at the house would return. They have plugged their refrigerator into a neighbor's generator so are managing. They were having trouble reaching her mother in Orlando and his sister in Toronto so I called for them.

Has anyone heard any news of how the boats in the Boat Harbour marina are?
Barbara, I did hear today that 2 boats that were docked at Boat Harbour were OK. They were tied up with lots of webbing back by docks 5 & 6. I am also wondering about the rest of the marina & dock situation.

Great Cistren Abaco Report

Just spoke with my husband David. We have phones and power back on it seems at Great Cistren.

Everyone in our little community is fine and doing the best they can waiting on Insurance agents. May be a long wait, lets hope that they work as fast as the power and phone company has. They deserve a hand for all there hard work.

Just spoke with Johnnycake and he can’t wait to be back on the board posting his information directly but currently has no Internet access. He would like to say thanks to everyone for their prayers and concerns. He tells us at his home (located on Pelican Shores - looking out towards Man-A-War Cay), they are very fortunate as he now has power, water and telephone service. But he says they are one of very few to have all these services. All the people of Abaco and the municipal companies have been working very hard putting it all back together. Marsh Harbour Airport has flights arriving via charter – No commercial flights yet. Did see a large cargo plane take off so it looks as though supplies are starting to arrive. The main terminal building at MHH airport is not being used as of today. Flights are going over to the Cherokee building, on the West Side of the airport, for unloading and parking. He ran into one of his friends from the Cherokee Sound area and they still do not have power. Johnnycake spoke with George Riviere, a surveyor in MHH, George has a home in Bahama Palms Shores (also known as High Banks) and his home was missing shingles but all else was fine. At this time johnnycake is going to drive down into Bahama Palm Shores. The highway leading to this area has been flooded near the sheep farm. He tells us there is still a couple of inches of water on the road but feels it is passable at this point. Will get back to you all once we hear his report of Bahama Palm Shore area.

Does anyone have any info on the gentleman who posted on the "temporary board" before Frances hit the Abacos that stated he had just flown over and taken aerial photos of the islands and was going to do same after Frances?

After Floyd, this is how we discovered our boat was still floating.

Does anyone have any info on the whereabouts or condition of a 40+ trawler named Loafer or the owner Walter Quick. To our knowledge he has not been heard from since before the hurricane. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Pattie and Bob!

Welcome back! You all must be exhausted! From what we heard, you continued to provide invaluable communication services during the "downtime" caused by Frances. We have missed you here on the Board and Bob's forecasts on his web site. Mont came to the rescue of Sinclair and all the "Boardies" and made sure we stayed up after the Board crashed -- the new format takes some getting used to, but we are so very thankful that we had the means to communicate during and after Frances and thankful to Mont for all he has done for us. Thank you for all you do for everyone there in the Abacos and her many friends outside the Bahamas. So happy you and all our friends in the Abacos are okay. Please take care of yourselves.
